Gynecological examination

A gynecological examination is not painful for most women, but some may feel some discomfort. If you have questions relating to the examination, you may talk to the doctors beforehand and explain your concerns.

What is a gynecologist?

Gynecologists are doctors specialized in women’s health, as well as pregnancy and childbirth. Our gynecologists have wide experience in evaluating and treating gynecological problems and diseases. Gynecology involves the health of the female reproductive organs, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix and vagina. Diseases may include infections and sexually transmitted diseases, tumors, menstruation and fertility issues, hormone disorders, incontinence.

What happens during a gynecological examination?

If there is reason to suspect a gynecological disorder, the doctor will perform a gynecological examination. The doctor will first examine the external reproductive organs, after which he or she will examine the internal reproductive organs using a specialized instrument called a speculum to evaluate the vagina and the cervix. Using one or two fingers the doctor may also do a bimanual examination of the pelvic organs. During the gynecological examination, necessary tests will be performed depending on your symptoms and what is suspected. The general practitioners and gynecologists at Dr.Dropin may take bacterial swab tests, which may include checking for sexually transmitted diseases, and Pap smears. Our gynecologists may do further examination with ultrasound and biopsies. The majority of symptoms are related to benign conditions that are easily treated.
