Tinea (ringworm)

The most common are fungi on the feet, scalp, crotch and body. A fungal infection on the body is often called "Ringworm" and Tinea actually means worm in Latin, although the condition has nothing to do with this.

Tinea can occur in many different places and be caused by different types of fungi, but it is most often "pityrosporum" which is a type of yeast. You can find more information on our page about "Candida".

What is Tinea (ringworm)?

Tinea is a fungal infection that can occur in various places on the body. The most common areas are the feet (athlete's foot), scalp, groin and body. Although the name "ringworm" suggests otherwise, Tinea has nothing to do with worms. The name comes from the Latin word for worm, "tinea".

Different types of fungi can cause Tinea, but the most common is "pityrosporum", a type of yeast. Learn more about yeast on our Candida page (link to the Candida page here).

Treatment of Tinea (ringworm)

Treatment for tinea is usually the same regardless of the type of fungus that is causing it.

  • Antifungal cream: Start with an antifungal cream (link to product or relevant information) applied to the infected area.
  • Keep the area dry and airy: To prevent fungal growth, it is important to keep the infected area as dry and airy as possible. Wear open-toed shoes, breathable underwear, or other measures depending on the location of the infection.
  • Medication: If the fungal infection does not respond to cream, your doctor may prescribe antifungal medications to take orally.
