Testicular cancer: Understand symptoms and when to consult a doctor

Testicular cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer that usually occurs in men aged 20-40.

It usually causes few symptoms, and changes in testicular size, consistency and a feeling of heaviness in the testicle are often the only noticeable signs.

Fortunately, testicular cancer has a very favorable prognosis, and approximately 98% of Norwegian men with this type of cancer are successfully treated.

Self-examination of the Testicles

Self-examination

Many cases of testicular cancer are discovered by the patients themselves by noticing a lump or changes in the testicles. Regular examinations of your testicles can therefore be one of the most important things you do.

Symptoms

The symptoms of testicular cancer can vary from person to person, and some people may experience symptoms that others do not. However, there are several common symptoms that you should be aware of:

  • Changes in the size or shape of the testicle: The most common symptom of testicular cancer is an unusual lump, swelling or enlargement in one of the testicles. This may feel like a hard or firm lump.
  • Pain or discomfort: Some people experience pain or discomfort in the testicle or scrotum. This can vary from mild pain to more intense discomfort.
  • Heaviness: Some may feel a sensation of heaviness or fullness in the affected testicle.
  • Pain in the back, stomach or chest: In some cases, testicular cancer can spread to other parts of the body, and this can cause pain in the back, stomach or chest.
  • Breast enlargement: In rare cases, testicular cancer can cause an increase in breast size in men due to hormonal changes.
