Why is menopause not taken seriously in our society?

Menopause has historically been a taboo subject, which has led to a lack of knowledge and understanding both in society and within the healthcare system. Many women find that their symptoms are not taken seriously, and that they do not get the support they need.

Reasons for non-recognition:

  • Lack of knowledge: Both women and health professionals may lack sufficient knowledge about the menopause and its effects.
  • Stigma and taboo: Menopause can be a sensitive subject, and many women are reluctant to talk about their experiences.
  • Underprioritisation: In the health care system, menopause and its symptoms can often be seen as less important compared to other health problems.

At Dr.Dropin, we are committed to changing this situation by providing our patients with the information, support and treatment they need to live a healthy and fulfilling life through menopause.

The concepts simply explained

Menopause is a natural phase in life where women stop having periods and can no longer get pregnant. The average age for menopause in Norway is 52-53 years. There are different phases of menopause:

  • Menopause: This is the time of your last menstrual period. You have reached menopause when you have not had any bleeding for 12 months.
  • Perimenopause: This is the period before menopause, where you may experience irregular periods and typical menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and mood swings.
  • Postmenopause: This is the time after menopause.

Sometimes menopause occurs earlier than usual:

  • Early menopause: Between 40 and 45 years old.
  • Premature Ovarian Insufficiency: Before 40 years old.

Important:

  • There is no blood test that can predict exactly when you will reach menopause.
  • The average age for menopause in Norway is 52-53 years old.

If you have any questions or are experiencing symptoms related to menopause, you can book an appointment with one of our gynecologists.

Treatment options

Hormone therapy (MHT)

Hormone therapy can relieve many of the distressing symptoms of menopause by replacing the hormones the body no longer produces. At Dr. Dropin, MHT is adapted individually based on each patient's needs and health history. This ensures the best possible effect and minimal risk.

Natural and lifestyle-based treatments

In addition to medical treatment, lifestyle changes can play an important role:
