What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis (sinusitis) is an inflammation of the mucous membranes in the sinuses, the air-filled cavities around the nose and eyes. It can be acute (lasting up to 4 weeks) or chronic (lasting more than 12 weeks).

Symptoms of sinus infection

  • Impaired sense of smell: Reduced or inability to smell.
  • Green or yellow snot: Thick, discolored snot from the nose.
  • Headache: Often worst in the morning or when bending forward.
  • Fever: May occur, especially with acute sinusitis.
  • Toothache: Pain in the teeth of the upper jaw.
  • Cough: May be worse at night.

Causes of sinusitis

  • Viral infections: Colds or flu are common causes of acute sinusitis.
  • Bacteria: In some cases, bacteria can cause sinus infections.
  • Allergies: Pollen allergy or other allergies can increase the risk of sinus infections.
  • Other factors: Nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum or weakened immune system.

Treatment of sinusitis

Acute sinusitis

  • Often resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks.
  • Pain relievers: Paracetamol or ibuprofen can relieve pain and fever.
  • Nasal spray: Saline spray or cortisone spray can help with nasal congestion.
  • Antibiotics: In the case of bacterial sinusitis, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics.

Chronic sinusitis

  • Long-term treatment with nasal spray and possibly other medications.
  • Surgery may be necessary in some cases.
