Burst blood vessels

Burst blood vessels (telangiectasias) are thin, dilated and visible blood vessels that lie just below the skin's surface. These can have a reddish or bluish colour, and most often occur on the face or legs. The burst blood vessels can either be thin lines or look star-like branching out from a point (spider nevi). Burst blood vessels do not hurt and are not felt on the outside of the skin. If you experience this, it could be varicose veins, which must be treated surgically.

Dr.Dropin now offers laser as a treatment for burst blood vessels. You can also read more about the use of lasers and the treatment process.

What is burst blood vessels?

There can be several reasons why you get burst blood vessels. First, age may play a role, because the incidence of burst blood vessels increases with age. Sun exposure, preferably in combination with light skin, will also increase the likelihood of having burst blood vessels. In addition, you are more prone to burst blood vessels if you are pregnant, on hormone therapy, have rosacea, are overweight or have a job where you stand or sit a lot.

Burst blood vessels are not dangerous, but there are still many who find it embarrassing. If you want to remove burst blood vessels, our dermatologists can help with this.

Treatment of burst blood vessels

At Dr.Dropin, burst blood vessels are treated with our effective and gentle laser. The light from the laser is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood, so that the blood coagulates, which causes the blood vessel to be destroyed and then fade. The treatment may be somewhat uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few minutes and will not leave visible scars.

After the treatment, a cream will be applied to reduce the swelling, before the area is cooled. Compression stockings are then put on, and these should be worn for up to 14 days after the treatment. It is worth noting that the blood vessels will become extra visible for 8-12 weeks after the treatment before the visibility is reduced and the desired result is achieved.

For optimal results, 2-3 treatments may be necessary.
