Weight-loss injections and subsidized prescriptions

The obesity epidemic is one of the biggest health challenges of our time. Millions of Norwegians live with overweight and obesity, and the risk of serious diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer is increasing dramatically.

In recent years, new, effective medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro have emerged. Studies show that these medications, in combination with lifestyle changes, can lead to significant weight loss and improved health for many. Yet, there is a major problem: These medications are not available on subsidized prescriptions (blå resept). This is deeply unfair for several reasons:

Firstly, obesity is a disease. It is a complex, chronic condition with both biological and societal causes. It is not simply a matter of "eating less and exercising more." Many factors come into play, including genetics, hormones, environment, and socioeconomic conditions. For many, living with obesity is a daily struggle, which can lead to reduced quality of life, stigmatization, and an increased risk of a number of health problems.

Secondly, weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro are an effective treatment. Studies show that these medications can lead to significant weight loss—up to 20%—and thus reduce the risk of comorbidities. Yet, people with obesity have to pay the full price for these medications, which creates a class divide in healthcare. Only those with good financial means can afford treatment, while those with fewer resources are left without the help they need.

The lack of support from the authorities reinforces the stigma surrounding obesity. It sends a signal that people with obesity have to fend for themselves and that their health is not as important as others'.

What can we do?

  • We must demand that politicians take responsibility and make weight-loss injections available on subsidized prescriptions for everyone who needs them.
  • We must increase knowledge about obesity as a disease and inform about effective treatment options.
  • We must combat the stigma surrounding obesity and create a more inclusive society.
