Solarium: A risk young people should not take lightly

A recent survey by VG reveals a worrying trend: Young Norwegians are more concerned with getting a tan than the risk of skin cancer. This is a development that we at Dr. Dropin see with great concern.

Solarium and skin cancer: A dangerous combination

There is no doubt that tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer, especially the most dangerous form, malignant melanoma. Studies show that using a solarium before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by as much as 75%. Despite this, there are many young people who still choose to use solariums regularly.

Why are young people so attracted to solariums?

The survey from VG points to several reasons why young people use solariums:

Beauty ideals: A tan is often seen as attractive and healthy, which can lead to pressure to achieve a tan.

Lack of knowledge: Many young people may not be aware of how harmful tanning beds actually are, or they may underestimate the risks.

Easy accessibility: Solarium is still relatively easy to access, despite age limits and restrictions.

What can we do?

It is important that we take this development seriously and work together to protect young people from the harmful effects of tanning beds. Here are some measures that can help:

Increased knowledge: We must ensure that young people receive good information about the risks of solariums and the importance of sun protection. Schools, health professionals and parents all have an important role to play here.

Stricter regulation: Stricter regulation of solariums may be necessary, for example through higher age limits, stricter requirements for information and guidance, and more frequent inspections of tanning studios.

Changing attitudes: We must work to change attitudes towards solariums and promote healthy ideals of beauty. It is important to emphasize that a tan is not worth risking your health for.
