Epidermoid cysts

Cysts are cavities filled with fluid or air. They can occur just about anywhere. They are harmless and easy to remove. Sometimes you can get them in the outer layer of the skin called "epidermis" where they occur in areas with a lot of sebaceous glands. This is why they most often occur on the scalp, face and upper body. They can also penetrate deeper tissues if they become large. This can cause a painful inflammation where a lot of pus often forms.

Treatment of cysts

Cysts are very common and not everyone cares about getting them treated.

Treatment is often done for cosmetic reasons or because the cyst creates discomfort or pain. The cyst is removed by draining fluid or cutting it away. This is a routine procedure in most doctors' offices.

Prognosis

Cysts usually do not go away on their own. Sometimes they get hurt. Other times they become hard and form small nodules in the skin. In most cases, nothing happens. If you get the cyst drained of fluid, it may come back. If you have the cyst removed, it will not return.
